12 November 2010, fifteen TPL staff members embarked on the first management trip overseas. For some, it was their first time flying. Anticipation was flying high in the air as we waited eagerly at Tan Son Nhat airport for our Air Asia flight. As the plane took off, we bid farewell to the energetic and charming Saigon, and welcome in the bustling and adrenaline-filled Bangkok.

As the song goes…
”Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don’t know that the city is getting”

Bangkok, meaning “City of Angels”, is not the kind of city that one forgets about after visiting. Contemporary, contrasting and captivating are just some words lingering in our minds as we wandered through the traditional and ancient religious centers, mingled with sky-reaching buildings. Look around and you will see Bangkok is more than a “City of Angels” – its also a land of contradictions. At dusk, religious tranquility in the air clashes with the crazy nightlife scene. Street carts stand next to trendy restaurants, tuk tuks and Mercedes whiz through roads at mind boggling speed. My Phan, German supervisor, recalls her favorite part of this annual retreat.

  • Three words to sum up Bangkok for you?
  • Fun, Experience, knowledge! Fun, shopping at the Chatachuk market. Experience, we bonded together in the team building activities. And Knowledge, we got to know each other better than ever before.

  • What was the best meal in Bangkok?
  • Crab & Peanut Butter at Somboon Seafood. How could I forget that tantalizing flavor of the crab meat soaking in the mouth watering peanut butter and egg sauce? Put simply, it was a meal to die for.

  • What was the most memorable time for you?
  • The last game of teambuilding. Each person from the team was blind-folded and they had to conquer an obstacle course with the direction from their partner. Everyone was cheering their team member on – it was truly inspiring.

  • Who had the craziest time at Bangkok?
  • Phu Tran – for sure! It was his first time flying and we got to witness the “Phu Dance Moves” at a club. We knew he could sing, but we certainly didn’t know he had many unknown talents.

  • Where would you like the next retreat to be?
  • Singapore! Another awesome city!
